Humanity's actions over the next ten years will be critical to the future of our planet, the ecosystems it maintains, and the species which live within them. The time for widely effective preventative actions has passed, and we are now faced with the need for intelligent reactive measures to try to counter the human-created feedback loops which are compounding climate change, destroying ecosystems, and rapidly transforming our environment. These feedback loops develop quickly, unexpectedly, and exponentially. To have any chance at all of effectively reacting to them, we need to know about them at the earliest possible stage, we need as much data as possible to build a picture of conditions before the potential crisis began, how it began, how it is developing, and what the potential consequences could be. We need the tools to group, analyse, and understand that data, to transform it into meaningful information. We also need distribution methods to get that information out to the media, governments, NGOs, scientific and activist communities, and the public so that we can act.
Right now, there are thousands of organisations and individuals worldwide gathering, analysing, and working with environmental data - universities, research institutes, individual researchers, environmental data corporations. This data is collected, stored in centralised databases, owned by the collector, and used according to their needs. The data is generally private, may be shared upon request, sometimes for sale, sometimes available free for limited use. It is open to tampering, manipulation, loss, technical failure, and subject to the motivations of the collecting body.
Collecting environmental data is expensive. It requires human resources, equipment, transport, and other expenses. These resources must come from somewhere, and when a research body gathers funds, it frequently comes with strings attached. When governments become entrenched in conservative positions and corporations are motivated mainly to maintain the status quo (as far as general operations go), environmental research that strengthens those positions will be encouraged, whilst research that challenges them will be discouraged.
So, the problem in a nutshell: what we need is a fast, free, accurate, and accessible way to monitor as many environmental variables as possible, to understand those variables, and to recognise developing crises; but what we have is a collection of methods which are hard to access, centralised, expensive, subjective and privately owned.
Our proposed solution is the SEA nexus. We're building a unified platform for environmental data on blockchain - a one-stop resource for every key measurable factor of our planet. The SEA ecosystem will revolutionise how we obtain, understand and distribute environmental big data.
80% of the world's population owns a smartphone. That's more than 6.3bn people walking around with a device that can connect to the internet, pinpoint their GPS location (including elevation), and supply environmental observations in thousands of data subclasses using numerical, text, visual and audio inputs. Add a few cheap, basic additional devices (thermometer, litmus paper, air quality sensor, hydrophone) and the number of subclasses grows exponentially. To leverage the potential of this untapped resource, we are building iOS, Android, and web apps that can be used to gather hundreds of thousands of different types of data, from land use to thermosphere, species presence to wildfires.
At the same time, our partnerships and research show that many of the organisations currently gathering environmental data operate within the constraints of the centralised system not by choice, but because they have no other option. Given the opportunity, they would gladly contribute their data to a decentralised resource (particularly if there was a financial benefit). This leads us to the development of our input API - we have enlisted a cohort of partner organisations who will connect their existing systems to ours, supplying large numbers of environmental observations per day programmatically, and providing a bedrock of high-trust data to underpin our consensus mechanism.
Combine these input methods with the analysis capabilities of our AI, the reliability provided by our consensus methods, and the ease of access to the resulting blockchain data, and we have a global network of sensors monitoring every important environmental variable, constantly looking for situations of interest, transforming millions of daily observations into meaningful trends - these are the tools we need to recognise feedback loops, to raise alarms, and to trigger early action.
